What is Spelling 2 Communicate
Spelling 2 Communicate (S2C) is a method used to teach non-speakers, minimal speakers and unreliable speakers to communicate. Communication occurs through a "bio-hack:" although the fine motor of speech has been disrupted, we use the shoulder and arm (gross motor) to connect to various spelling boards. Their speech may not be available to them, but through poking and pointing on a letter board, non-speaking autistics can make connections to the language center in their brains.

NON-SPEAKING DOES NOT MEAN NON-THINKING!
At The Spell Well S2C, most of the spellers we serve are autistic. This means working with, and around, apraxia, the neurological disorder that makes motor planning difficult.

Non-speakers, unreliable speakers and minimal speakers have been previously thought to be cognitively deficient. They are not! They are cognitively intact, but need guidance to direct their body. Through letter boards, we connect non-speakers' trapped thoughts to the outside world, allowing them to participate in their own life.

S2C was developed and standardized at I-ASC, the International Association for Spelling as Communication.
